Deep Cleaning vs Standard Cleaning

Hi there, it's Arianna. If you've ever booked a cleaning and wondered why your grout still looked sad afterward, or if you've paid for a deep clean and thought "wait, did I really need all that?", you're not alone. I get asked about the difference between standard cleaning and deep cleaning almost every week, so I figured it was time to lay it all out plainly.

What a standard clean actually covers

A standard clean is your maintenance visit. It's what keeps your home feeling fresh and cared for on a regular basis, whether that's weekly, biweekly, or monthly. During a standard clean, my team and I wipe down counters, sinks, and stovetops, clean and disinfect bathrooms, dust reachable surfaces, vacuum and mop floors, empty trash, and make sure common areas look tidy and welcoming. We're moving efficiently through your home, hitting the spots that get dirty fastest and keeping everything looking good between deeper sessions.

What we don't do in a standard clean is get into the nooks and crannies that build up grime slowly over time. Baseboards, the inside of your oven, the tops of ceiling fans, and behind the couch are not part of the regular routine. That's not us being lazy, it's just that those areas don't need attention every single visit, and tackling them each time would mean less time for the everyday stuff that matters most.

What makes a deep clean different

A deep clean is the thorough, top-to-bottom reset. Think of it as catching up on everything a standard clean skips. We scrub baseboards, wipe down door frames and light switches, clean inside the microwave and oven, degrease the stovetop hood, tackle grout lines in the shower and on tile floors, dust light fixtures and ceiling fans, and move furniture to clean underneath and behind it. We also pay extra attention to window sills, blinds, and any built up dust in corners that tends to get overlooked. Basically, if a spot in your home has been quietly collecting dust bunnies for a while, we're going after it.

Deep cleans take longer because there's simply more ground to cover, and more elbow grease involved. That's why they cost a bit more than a standard visit, but the payoff is a home that feels genuinely reset, not just tidied up.

So which one do you actually need?

Here's my rule of thumb. If your home is already on a regular cleaning schedule and things are generally under control, standard cleaning is exactly right. It keeps the day to day mess from piling up and your home always feels presentable.

A deep clean makes sense in a few specific situations. Moving into a new place or getting one ready to sell almost always calls for one, since you want every surface truly fresh, not just the visible ones. If it's been months since your last thorough cleaning, or you've never had one, that's a good sign it's time. I also recommend a deep clean before hosting a big event, after a renovation that left dust everywhere, or simply as a seasonal reset a couple times a year, kind of like spring cleaning but without you having to lift a finger.

A lot of my clients actually start with a deep clean and then move into a standard schedule afterward. That way we're maintaining a home that's already been brought up to that higher standard, rather than trying to keep pace with buildup that never got fully addressed. It's a nice way to start things off on the right foot.

If you're not sure which one fits your situation, you honestly don't need to figure it out alone. Tell me a bit about your space and how long it's been since a thorough cleaning, and I can point you in the right direction.
