How Often Should You Hire a House Cleaner?

One of the questions I get most often is some version of: "Arianna, how often should I actually be booking a cleaning?" And I love it, because there’s no single right answer. It really depends on your home, your household, and honestly, how much mental energy you want to spend thinking about the baseboards. Let me walk you through what I usually recommend for different situations.

Living Solo or With a Partner

If it’s just one or two of you, a monthly deep clean is often plenty to keep things feeling fresh. You’re not generating a ton of mess on your own, and with a little light tidying in between, your place can stay in great shape. That said, if you work long hours or your social life means the kitchen sees a lot of action, bumping up to every other week makes a real difference. Coming home to a clean apartment after a packed week in San Jose traffic? Worth every penny.

Families With Kids

Kids are wonderful. Kids are also little chaos engines. If you’ve got children at home, I’d honestly recommend bi-weekly cleanings as a baseline. Things accumulate fast, from sticky countertops to bathroom floors that need more attention than you’d think. For larger families or households with little ones under five, some of my clients find that weekly visits keep the stress low and the home genuinely livable. You shouldn’t spend your weekend scrubbing, when you could be at a park or the farmers market instead.

Pet Owners

Pets bring so much joy, and also so much fur. If you share your home with dogs or cats, plan for more frequent cleanings. Pet dander builds up quickly, especially on upholstered furniture and in corners, and it can affect air quality over time. Most of my clients with pets prefer bi-weekly visits, and some with multiple animals go weekly. It’s one of those things where the difference between a monthly and a bi-weekly clean is really noticeable.

Busy Professionals and Families on the Go

The Bay Area is a busy place. Long commutes, demanding jobs, kids’ activities, the whole juggle. If your schedule is packed and cleaning keeps falling to the bottom of the list, that’s a sign you’d genuinely benefit from regular help. Bi-weekly is my most popular option for a reason. It keeps things consistently clean without feeling like a big event every time I arrive. Think of it as maintenance rather than a rescue mission.

Working With a Tighter Budget

I completely understand that professional cleaning is an added expense, and not everyone can do weekly or even bi-weekly visits right now. If budget is a consideration, start with a monthly deep clean and focus on the high-traffic areas. Over time, as you see how much easier it makes your life, a lot of people find a way to add a second visit each month. I’d rather help you find something sustainable than oversell you on a schedule that doesn’t fit.

Special Occasions and Seasonal Cleanings

Some folks don’t need regular service but want a thorough clean before hosting a dinner party, after a renovation, or heading into a new season. That works too. A one-time or occasional deep clean can reset your whole home and give you a fresh start, no ongoing commitment required.

At the end of the day, the best cleaning schedule is the one that actually works for your life. If you’re not sure where to start, I’m happy to chat.
