One of the questions I get asked more than almost anything else is how often someone should actually book a cleaning. I wish I could give you a single magic number, but the truth is it depends on your home, your household, and honestly, your neighborhood here in the Bay Area. After years of cleaning homes from San Jose to the Peninsula, I’ve learned that the right schedule is really about matching the cleaning to your specific life, not following some generic rule.
Weekly cleanings for busy, bigger households
If you’ve got kids, pets, roommates, or a home that just sees a lot of daily traffic, weekly cleaning tends to be the sweet spot. Bigger family homes in areas like Almaden or Willow Glen collect dust, crumbs, and clutter fast, especially with multiple people coming and going. Weekly visits keep things from piling up so you’re never staring down a deep clean that takes all weekend. It also means you get to actually enjoy your house instead of constantly noticing the stuff that needs doing.
Biweekly works for most Bay Area homes
For a lot of my clients, especially dual income households or folks working in tech with long hours and unpredictable schedules, every two weeks hits the balance just right. It’s frequent enough to stay ahead of dust and grime, but it doesn’t feel excessive if your home isn’t getting hammered with daily mess. Biweekly is honestly my most popular schedule, and for good reason. It fits how a lot of people actually live here, busy during the week and wanting weekends free instead of spent scrubbing.
Monthly for smaller or tidier spaces
If you’re in a condo or a smaller place in San Jose or nearby, and you keep up with your own light tidying between visits, monthly cleanings can absolutely do the job. Smaller square footage means less surface area to collect dust and mess, so you don’t need the same frequency as a five bedroom house. I have plenty of clients living solo or as a couple who love their monthly deep clean because it keeps things fresh without needing anything more.
Don’t forget our local dust, pollen, and smoke factor
Here’s something that’s very specific to us. The Bay Area’s dry summers kick up a ton of dust, and our spring pollen season is no joke if you’ve got allergies or big windows that stay open. And then there are the wildfire smoke days, when even a well sealed house ends up with a fine layer of ash and particulates settling on every surface. If you notice your allergies acting up indoors, or you can see haze creeping into your home during fire season, that’s a great time to bump up your cleaning frequency for a stretch, even if you normally stick to monthly. Pet owners deal with this too, since dander loves to team up with all that seasonal dust.
One-time and seasonal cleanings have their place too
Not everyone needs an ongoing schedule, and that’s completely fine. Moving in or out, prepping for guests, recovering from a renovation, or just wanting a fresh start before the holidays are all great reasons for a one-time deep clean. Some folks do a seasonal cleaning a few times a year and handle the rest themselves, which works great if you’re generally tidy but want a thorough reset when the seasons change.
Finding your own rhythm
The honest answer is that there’s no single right frequency for everyone. Your ideal schedule depends on your home’s size, how many people and pets live there, your work schedule, and even which part of the Bay Area you’re in. I always tell people to start somewhere that feels reasonable and adjust from there. If biweekly starts to feel like too much house between visits, we’ll switch it up. If monthly feels like plenty, we’ll keep it easy.
