Move-In Cleaning Checklist for Your New Home

Hi, I’m Arianna, and if you’re reading this, congratulations on the new place! Whether you’re settling into a condo near downtown San Jose or a house out in the suburbs, there’s a magic window right before your furniture shows up where you can clean every inch without dragging a couch around or reaching behind a bed frame. I love this part of moving because it’s your one shot to start completely fresh, and I want to walk you through how I’d tackle it if it were my own home.

Here’s the thing about cleaning before you move furniture in: it’s so much easier and so much more thorough. Empty rooms mean you can get into every corner, wipe down every baseboard, and clean floors edge to edge without shuffling boxes around. Plus, you have no idea how the last tenants or owners treated the place, so it’s nice to know your first night’s sleep happens in a space that’s truly yours, not just visually tidy but actually clean underneath.

Start in the Kitchen

The kitchen is where I always begin because it’s the room people forget to deep clean the most. Open every single cabinet and drawer and wipe down the inside, not just the fronts. You’d be amazed what collects in there, crumbs, shelf liner dust, the occasional mystery sticky spot. Then move to the appliances. If the fridge and oven are staying, pull out the shelves and racks and clean them separately, wipe down the interior walls, and don’t skip the seals around the doors. Give the microwave a once-over too, and check under the sink while you’re at it since that spot loves to hide grime.

Bathrooms Deserve Extra Attention

Bathrooms are the other big one. Scrub the tub, shower, and tile grout, and pay attention to the toilet base and behind it, an area that’s shockingly easy to overlook. Wipe down cabinets inside and out, clean the mirrors, and don’t forget the exhaust fan vent, which tends to collect dust bunnies nobody wants to think about.

Floors, Walls, and Baseboards

With the rooms empty, this is your best chance to clean floors properly, whether that means mopping hardwood, steaming tile, or vacuuming carpet corner to corner. Baseboards collect a surprising amount of dust and sometimes scuff marks, so a good wipe down makes the whole room feel brighter. While you’re at it, do a quick pass on the walls too, especially near light switches and doorways where handprints and smudges like to gather.

Don’t Forget the HVAC Filter

This one’s easy to skip but it matters a lot for air quality, especially with our Bay Area seasons swinging between dry heat and foggy mornings. Swap out the HVAC filter before you start living there full time. It’s a small task that makes a real difference in how fresh your home feels and breathes.

The Spots Everyone Forgets

Now for my favorite part, the sneaky spots. The space on top of the fridge collects dust like nowhere else in the house. Inside closets need a wipe down on shelves and floors before your clothes and boxes go in. And window tracks, oh, window tracks. They somehow gather grit no matter how long a place has been empty, so grab a vacuum attachment or a damp cloth and get in there.

Moving is such an exciting chapter, and starting in a genuinely clean space just makes it feel even more like yours. But if move-in day is already packed with boxes, paperwork, and one too many trips to the hardware store, you don’t have to add scrubbing to the list. My team at Arianna’s House Cleaning would love to handle the deep clean so you can walk into a sparkling home and just enjoy it. Reach out whenever you’re ready, and welcome to the neighborhood.
