Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for California Renters

Moving out is already a full-time job with surprise overtime. You’re packing boxes, forwarding mail, finding the coffee maker, and wondering why you own so many mystery cords. As Arianna, owner and lead cleaner at Arianna’s House Cleaning, I’ve helped plenty of Bay Area renters get a home ready for its final walkthrough. A thorough move-out clean can help support a smooth security deposit return, and around here, where rents are high, that deposit is usually far too substantial to leave to chance.

Start with your lease and the broom clean standard

Before you grab a sponge, read your lease and any move-out instructions from your landlord or property manager. Many California leases use the phrase “broom clean,” but landlord expectations often go beyond a quick sweep. In practice, they may expect the unit to be empty, reasonably clean, free of trash, and ready for the next tenant. Normal wear is one thing. Grease in the oven, crumbs in cabinets, and a bathtub ring that could host its own convention are another.

Take photos after you clean, especially if the unit had existing marks or damage when you moved in. I’m not a lawyer, but good records and a clean home make the move-out process much less fuzzy. Your goal is simple: leave the place looking cared for, not like you vanished mid-pancake breakfast.

Give the kitchen your full attention

The kitchen is usually where deposit deductions like to hide. Empty every cabinet and drawer, then wipe the interiors, doors, handles, and shelves. Pull out the refrigerator shelves and drawers if you can, wash them, and clean crumbs and spills from the inside. Don’t forget the freezer, microwave, dishwasher filter area, and the little ledge around appliance doors where mysterious bits tend to gather.

Clean the oven and stovetop thoroughly, including burner grates and knobs. Degrease the range hood, hood filter, backsplash, and wall near the stove. Wipe the sink, faucet, and garbage disposal splash guard, then finish with the counters, light switches, and floors. A clean kitchen signals that the rest of the home probably got the same care.

Freshen bathrooms from grout to fixtures

Bathrooms need detail work. Scrub the tub or shower, tile, grout, shower doors, drains, toilet, vanity, and sink. Pay close attention to soap residue and hard-water spots around fixtures, because the Bay Area’s mineral deposits can be surprisingly clingy. Polish the mirror, wipe cabinet interiors, and clean the exhaust fan cover if it’s dusty. Replace any burned-out bulbs if your lease makes that your responsibility.

Then check the small stuff: behind the toilet, around the base of the vanity, towel bars, switch plates, and cabinet pulls. These are the places a quick tidy misses, but a walkthrough often notices.

Work through floors, walls, windows, and storage

Vacuum carpets carefully, including edges and closets, and mop hard floors after everything else is done. If you have stains, try to address them gently and follow your lease requirements for professional carpet cleaning, if any. Wipe baseboards, doors, door frames, vents, and reachable light fixtures. Remove tape, nails, and adhesive carefully, then touch up only if allowed and with a matching color.

Clean interior windows, tracks, and sills, plus blinds if they’re staying. Empty closets completely and wipe shelves and rods. If your rental includes a garage, balcony, patio, or storage area, remove all belongings, sweep it out, and dispose of any trash properly. That old paint can and half-used bottle of mystery cleaner are not a welcome housewarming gift.

Make your final walkthrough easier

Do one last slow lap with an empty box or trash bag in hand. Check cabinets, closets, laundry areas, the fridge, and behind doors. Return keys, remotes, and parking passes according to your landlord’s instructions. Moving is stressful enough without spending your last evening in the unit scrubbing a range hood. If you’d rather save your energy for settling into your next place, Arianna’s House Cleaning can handle the move-out clean for you.
