Common Cleaning Challenges in Bay Area Homes

I’ve cleaned a lot of homes across San Jose, Sunnyvale, and the surrounding area, and I can tell you this: Bay Area houses have their own personality. The fog rolling in off the coast, the mineral-heavy water coming out of the tap, the gorgeous mid-century Eichlers with their flat roofs and open beams — it’s all beautiful, and it all comes with some very specific cleaning quirks. Here are the ones I run into most often, along with what actually works.

Hard Water Stains on Fixtures and Glass

If your shower glass looks permanently cloudy no matter how many times you wipe it down, you’re not imagining things. Our water here is notoriously mineral-rich, and those calcium and magnesium deposits build up fast. The trick I swear by is a good white vinegar soak. Soak a cloth, press it against the surface for a few minutes, then scrub with a non-scratch pad. For stubborn buildup on faucets, a paste of baking soda and vinegar does the job without scratching the finish. Consistency is everything here — wiping down wet surfaces after each shower makes a real difference over time.

Fog, Humidity, and Mildew

Living near the coast means we deal with moisture levels that people in drier climates just don’t think about. That persistent fog and humidity find their way into bathrooms, window tracks, and closets — and if you’re not on top of it, mildew follows. I pay close attention to grout lines, caulking around tubs, and any spots where water tends to sit. A little hydrogen peroxide goes a long way on mildew without harsh fumes. Good ventilation helps too, so I always encourage clients to run the bathroom fan longer than they think they need to.

Dust in Older Homes and Eichlers

Bay Area housing stock skews older, and a lot of my clients live in beautiful homes built in the 1950s and 60s, including quite a few Eichlers. The radiant floor heating in those homes is wonderful, but the open floor plans and original ductwork can circulate dust in ways that newer constructions don’t. I use microfiber cloths and work top-to-bottom so dust doesn’t just resettle somewhere I’ve already cleaned. High-quality HEPA filters in vacuums make a noticeable difference too.

Kitchen Grease in a City Full of Great Cooks

We live in one of the best food cultures in the country, and people actually cook here. That means range hoods, backsplashes, and cabinet faces take a beating from grease over time. A degreaser with a little dwell time is the move — spray it, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe. I’ve found that skipping the dwell time just moves grease around rather than lifting it. For cabinet fronts, I’m careful to use something that won’t strip the finish, especially on painted wood.

Fitting Cleaning Into a Packed Schedule

So many of my clients work long hours in tech or run their own businesses. Cleaning genuinely slips to the bottom of the list, and then suddenly guests are coming over on Saturday and panic sets in. I get it completely. That’s actually why a lot of people find a regular cleaning schedule so helpful — not just for the clean house, but for the mental relief of knowing it’s handled.
